Late Spring 2016 New Music Playlist

Here is another listening session of new music released this spring, full of heavy-weight veterans such as Radiohead, Travis, The Dandy Warhols and Peter Bjorn and John plus new bands such as LNZDRF, Bayonne and Sofi Tukker. There’s also some country twang found in White Denim, Frightened Rabbit and Band of Horses along with some fuzzed-out indie songs from Autolux, Caveman and Cullen Omori. Listen on Spotify or as a YouTube Playlist.

1. “What You Talking About?” – Peter Bjorn and John
Swedish indie pop band Peter Bjorn and John is ready with a seventh album since 1999, Breakin Point, full of hook happy tunes like the lead single, “What You Talking About?”  With a blast of feel-good synths that sound like a cheery whistle, the song bounces along even while bemoaning issues of communication.

2. “Cinnamon” – Cullen Omori
Chicago’s Cullen Omori (formerly of Smith Westerns) continues on a similar course solo with psych pop leanings for his solo debut, New Misery. The melodic song “Cinnamon” cleverly skims the surface as he sings about the euphoria of finding love.

3. “Get Out” – Frightened Rabbit
Scottish quintet Frightened Rabbit recently released a fifth album, Painting of a Panic Attack, produced by Aaron Dessner of The National.  The band formed in 2003 and took a break after a long tour in support of the last album, 2013’s Pedestrian Verse, but returns to continue the journey with gritty, soulful indie rock.

4. “Casual Party” – Band of Horses
Southern indie rockers Band of Horses will soon release its fifth studio album since 2004, Why Are You OK. The single “Casual Party” is a full on musical love fest as the quintet takes the theme of meaningless social interactions.

5. “Thank You” – White Denim
Austin rockers White Denim had to reinvent itself after two band members left, so singer James Petralli likens the new album Stiff to a debut release although it counts as number seven since 2006. The song “Thank You” finds the group’s roots rock intact, while the new kicky sound brings a new energy to the music.

6. “Burn the Witch” – Radiohead
English indie supergroup Radiohead lives up to the hype for its first song in five years, “Burn the Witch,” an epic swirl of strings, pulsating rock rhythms and singer Thom Yorke’s plaintive vocals. It serves as the single and title track for the group’s ninth album since 1985, the first in five years after 2011’s King of Limbs.

7. “Styggo” – The Dandy Warhols
The Dandy Warhols, Portland’s alt rock juggernauts, has released its ninth album called Distortland. The tune “Styggo” chugs along with the signature swagger of singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor’s vocals and confidence galore amid this quartet.

8. “Lates” – Bayonne
Bayonne is the music project of multi-instrumentalist Roger Sellers, who likes to call it electronic/minimalist material. “Lates” is a dreamy track off the debut full length album, Spectrolite.

9. “Magnificent Time” – Travis
Scottish indie stalwarts Travis is ready with its eighth studio album since 1990, Everything At Once.   This carefree single, “Magnificent Time,” is fueled by a enthusiasm that other bands might find hard to fathom otherwise.

10. “Ocean” – Rogue Wave
California’s indie rock quartet Rogue Wave has released its sixth studio album since 2007, Delusions of Grand Fur. The zippy tune “Ocean” features the laid back vocals of frontman Zach Schwartz (a.k.a. Zach Rogue).

11. “Selectallcopy” – Autolux
L.A. alt rock trio Autolux returns after six years with a third album called Pussy’s Dead. Eclectic songs like “Selectallcopy” draw from influences such as post-punk, Krautrock and experimental electronic music.

12. “Hey Lion” – Sofi Tukker
New York-based duo Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern has made an impact on the strength of singles such as “Hey Lion,” a funky dance tune with a sparse instrumentation and sexy vocals. A self-titled EP is planned for later this year.

13. “Solitude” – M83
M83 is a French-American electronic music band led by Anthony Gonzalez, now based in L.A. The cinematic tune “Solitude” is the second single off Junk, a seventh studio album for the group since 2001.

14. “Beneath the Black Sea” – LNZNDRF
LNZNDRF, a new band touting post-punk and Krautrock influences, was formed by Ben Lanz (member of Beruit and collaborator with The National) and brothers Bryan and Scott Devendorf (both of The National).  “Beneath the Black Sea” is one of eight songs on the self-titled debut improvised and edited down from the recording session’s 30 plus minute jams.

15. “Neighboring in Telescopes”  – Eluvium
Eluvium is the moniker of ambient recording artist Matthew Cooper, who is based in Portland after being raised in Louisville. The floating soundscape of “Neighboring in Telescopes” is found on his eighth studio album of unreleased material from 2009 – 2015 called Curious Things.

Youtube Playlist of Spring 2013 New Music Songs

Here's some visuals for the latest Spring 2013 Playlist via YouTube.  It's always interesting to see what's available online to illustrate the list -- official videos, ones with lyrics provided for instant sing alongs, and live performances from the professional publicity events to fan filmed (check out the one of Toro y Moi in Moscow!) Cayucas' video for "High School Lover" was already featured on an earlier blog post but in context with the others it takes on another life. And The Shout Out Louds have posted a video with snippets of their entire CD, so take a listen to it all or find the song "Circles" at 8:50.

Spring 2013 New Music Playlist

The groundhog predictions were just plain wrong this year as snow stayed in the forecast, along with the cold weather, through the first day of spring.  At least there was plenty of new music to dig through with new albums by Toro y Moi, Frightened Rabbit, Phosphorescent, and Youth Lagoon, to spice up the continuum of life indoors.  Teaser singles from upcoming albums featuring The Flaming Lips, Fitz and The Tantrums, and Phoenix also kept music fans longing for spring, while new bands Parquet Courts, Cayucos and Painted Palms reinforced the seasonal theme of renewal.  Link to listen here.

**EXTRA CREDIT IF YOU CAN NAME EVERY BAND WITH BROTHERS IN THE LINEUP (ANSWER AT END OF THIS POST!)

1. "Sun Blows Up Today" -- The Flaming Lips
Oklahoma’s own house band, The Flaming Lips, keep the party going with this latest psych rock experiment, which debuted on the Super Bowl as a Hyundai ad.  This single provides a blast of fun from the upcoming thirteenth studio album, The Terror.

2. "Rose Quartz" -- Toro y Moi
Chaz Bundwick of Toro y Moi decided to indulge in R&B and 90s house music influences for his third album, Anything In Return.  His smooth delivery still gives off the chillwave vibe he’s known for, even in this varied context.

3. "High School Lover" – Cayucas
This Santa Monica based quartet knows firsthand about that sunny California mindset pervading their music, layering their pop tunes with ambient party noise and other samples to keep things interesting. “High School Lover” is a tale of unrequited teenage love from their upcoming debut album, Bigfoot.

4. "Out of My League"-- Fitz and The Tantrums
Fitz and The Tantrums are back after their retro sound and constant touring caught the ear of many new fans.  This single from their sophomore album, More Than Just a Dream, expands the sound to incorporate 80s synths while threatening to bury Fitz’s stellar blue-eyed soul voice.

5.  "Borrowed Time" -- Parquet Courts
Brooklyn based band Parquet Courts brings a resurgence of punk attitude in their debut album, Light Up Gold.  Inspired by the NYC bands before them, the quartet charges through songs with a no holds barred approach to vocals and raucous rock performance.

6. "Weird Shapes" -- Surfer Blood
West Palm Beach alt rock quartet Surfer Blood is getting ready to release their sophomore album, Pythons. Singer John Paul Pitts lets loose in a yelping chorus, describing the song as an individual's manic episode (which unfortunately might remind fans of the domestic battery charges filed against him last year).

7. "Circles" -- Shout Out Louds
Swedish indie pop quintet Shout Out Louds return to the music scene with their fourth album, Optica.  The instrumental crunch of synths introduce this dreamy tune set in a 80s dance groove.

8. "The Woodpile" -- Frightened Rabbit
Singer/guitarist Scott Hutchinson is responsible for yet another heart on the sleeve story highlighting his honest, earthy delivery.  The Scottish indie rock quartet recently released their fourth studio album, Pedestrian Verse.

9. "Song for Zula" – Phosphorescent
Alabama native Matthew Houck, now based in Brooklyn, has been recording under the name Phosphorescent since 2001.  This song is from his fifth album of indie folk infused with a rock music sensibility, Muchacho.

10. "Entertainment" – Phoenix
French alt rock quartet Phoenix is returning since 2009’s breakout Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix with album number five, Bankrupt! After an Asian influenced intro, singer Thomas Mars commands another signature soaring chorus, instantly reminding fans of the band’s appeal.

11. "Click" -- Painted Palms
San Francisco based duo Painted Palms released this track as part of a preview for their upcoming debut album, Carousel.  The tune crafts an indie pop treatment of introspective, interwoven vocals over a percussive foundation.

12. "Dropla" -- Youth Lagoon
Idahoan Trevor Powers of Youth Lagoon branches out from personal shoegazing to low-fi conceptualizations of metaphysical musings, along with some ascribed pop music influences.  This floating meditation is from his sophomore album, Wondrous Bughouse.

13. "Trojans" -- Atlas Genius
Australian indie rock quartet Atlas Genius creates tightly formed pop songs with an infectious vengeance.  This catchy single is a solid introduction to their debut album, Through the Glass.

14. "Sacrilege" -- Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Alt rock trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs have served as a point of pride for New York City since 2000.  This single from their fourth studio album, Mosquito, adds a gospel choir as the only really appropriate background singers for the majestic voice of singer Karen O.

15.  "Photon"-- Pantha du Prince & The Bell Laboratory
German electronic music producer Hendrick Weber, a.k.a. Pantha du Prince, has teamed up with Norwegian percussion group The Bell Laboratory to layer chiming bells over his synth universe.  The resulting collaboration is Weber’s fourth studio album under this moniker, Elements of Light.

16. "You Were Afraid" -- Night Beds
23-year-old Nashville native Winston Yelten writes spare songs late at night and it shows. This is the first tune he wrote (at age 18) as Night Beds, dealing with the bittersweet realization that a relationship would soon end.

DID YOU GUESS 4 BANDS?  (IT COULD BE 5 IF WAYNE COYNE’S BROTHER MARK WAS STILL IN THE FLAMING LIPS!)  BONUS POINTS FOR ADDING TWINS AND THREEPEATS…
1. PARQUET COURTS
2. FRIGHTENED RABBIT
3. CAYUCAS -- TWINS
4. ATLAS GENIUS -- THREE OF THEM!!!

YouTube Video Playlist of Winter 2013 New Music Songs

For those of you who prefer some visuals with your new music, I've put together another YouTube Video Playlist for my latest collection of songs for Winter 2013.  Some videos have already appeared in previous blog posts about the songs (The Octopus Project and YACHT for example).  Others are live appearances I found online, some of which intrigued me simply by their locales (Unknown Mortal Orchestra at a familiar Mercury Lounge while I found Ra Ra Riot thrilled to be returning to their alma mater, Syracuse University).  A more professional video captured Wild Nothings as hosted by KEXP at last fall's CMJ Music Marathon, along with other official videos created by bands.  Lastly, how interesting to see an official lyric video for the Major Lazer song -- so that's what Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors is singing! Winter 2013 New Music Playlist

The year has started with enough music for another new music playlist and then some! Many selections are singles from upcoming releases that aren't even out yet but the songs sound strong enough to want to share immediately, from Jim James, Foxygen, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, to STRFKR, Major Lazer and Atoms for Peace.  Other tunes are stand alone singles that need no padding to release on their own. It all bodes well for 2013, so dig in. Link to listen here.

1. "Whitby" -- The Octopus Project
Austin-based indie electropop group The Octopus Project has released an infectious single "Whitby," as part of a digital Whitby EP.  The song features the vocals of Yvonne Lambert, veering away from the instrumental but always melodic ways of the band.

2. "Second Summer" -- YACHT
This song from indie electropop band YACHT is a single in honor of the Portland/Texas/L.A. group's tenth anniversary by its core, Jona Bechtoit and Claire L. Evans. "Second Summer" is a supposed state of mind, flaunting their goal "to create environments of total freedom," along with an instant dance party everywhere they go.

3. "Breakers" -- Local Natives
Local Natives is an indie rock quartet from Los Angeles, expanding their sound to include atmospheric instrumental breaks as evidenced in the "Breakers" introduction.  The song is a single from their upcoming sophomore album, Hummingbird.

4. "Like a Sundae" -- Black Moth Super Rainbow
Black Moth Super Rainbow is a collective of musicians from Pennsylvania that embrace analog electronic instruments to create their take on psychedelic electronica.  "Like a Sundae" sits solidly in the middle of the track list for their fifth album, Cobra Juicy.

5. "Off" -- Frightened Rabbit
Scottish indie rock band Frightened Rabbit is about to release their fourth album, but this song is from last fall's EP State Hospital.  The airy introduction creates a melancholy mood, before the down home jam by the quartet kicks in with Scott Hutchinson's gritty vocals.

6. "Nothing Arrived" -- Villagers
Villagers is an Irish indie rock quintet with soaring melodies, piano and acoustic guitar strumming supplying the heartfelt core of their music.  "Nothing Arrived" is off of their second album, {Awayland}.

7. "Only Heather" -- Wild Nothing
Jack Tatum's music project Wild Nothing released a sophomore album, Nocturne, in 2012.  His songs combine dream pop with indie rock, with a backing band for the live group sound.

8. "While I'm Alive" -- STRFKR
STRFKR is a new abbreviation for Portland's electronica band a.k.a. Starfucker.  The quartet overlays pop melodies and dance grooves that defy identification.  "While I'm Alive" is the opening track to the group's third album, Miracle Mile.

9. "Flood's New Light" -- Thee Oh Sees
Guitarist John Dwyer's prolific career includes this energetic quintet based in San Francisco. A new irresistibly catchy tune, "Flood's New Light," is off their sixth album in the current configuration, called Putrifiers II.

10. "Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)" -- Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Portland's Unknown Mortal Orchestra is riding their buzz band wave with a world tour and new sophomore album II.  "Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)" is the single for the new collection, showcasing the trio's fuzzed out guitar and buried vocals that still manage to stay above water.

11. "Default" -- Atoms for Peace
Atoms for Peace is a super group side project of Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers).  The quintet displays the complexities of sound similar to Radiohead in "Default," the single off the upcoming album called Amok.

12. "Shuggie" -- Foxygen
Jonathan Rado and Sam France are the songwriters for this new band, embracing a retro psychedelia which still sounds funky and fresh without being sardonic.  "Shuggie" is the single from their debut album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic.

13. "Beta Love" -- Ra Ra Riot
Ra Ra Riot is now a quartet, streamlined for the new electropop focus in their third album (also called Beta Love).  Wes Miles' falsetto calls everyone to the dance floor to the punctuation of synths, and fans should be eager to loosen up.

14. "Know You" -- Wild Belle
This sibling duo from Chicago brings on the reggae, via heavy reverb and indie sensibilities.  Natalie Bergman's enchanting vocals streamline the transition throughout their debut three song single.

15. "Know Til Now" -- Jim James
Jim James, the frontman of Louisville's psych rock band My Morning Jacket, releases his first solo album (under his own name) with the upcoming debut, Regions of Light and Sound.  "Know Til Now" mixes soulful vocals and bass heavy R&B without any restrictions of a group think.

16. "Get Free" -- Major Lazer
DJ/producer Diplo returns to his musical project Major Lazer with a second studio album due in February, Free the Universe.  Amber Coffman of The Dirty Projectors lends her idiosyncratic style, singing over the exotic synth layers and reggae beat.

Frightened Rabbit Video for "Dead Now" - NYC Travelogue

Here's an example of my favorite kind of video for a new song, Frightened Rabbit's "Dead Now" (from their upcoming album, Pedestrian Verse, due February 5). Scott Hutchinson's earthy vocals anchor the rollicking tune from the indie rockers, as we await their fourth collection.  Although basically just a home movie of the Scottish band coming to New York City, this travelogue idea never gets old in my book.  It's like you're hanging out with the band: going backstage, groggy people getting off the tour bus, walking together through Rockefeller Center.  Footage of their raucous stage show and crowd shots remind me off all the videos piling up on the NMMatterscorp YouTube Channel, with fond memories of live shows galore.

The concept is easy for any band, requiring a minimum of effort beyond careful editing.  But I never tire of this idea. Allowing an insider look always makes fascinating footage and of course I'm partial to the energy of New York City - the city that never sleeps.

Late Spring 2010 New Music Playlist

I wasn't sure whether to call this Late Spring or Early Summer Playlist with all the summery sounds and laid-back vibes within the songs that made the cut. But with new releases by the bands in the last post about free album previews (The National, New Pornographers and Minus the Bear) the next list is filling up quickly in time for summer listening. Link here to listen, enjoy!

1. It's Working/MGMT
2. Flash Delirium/MGMT
The second release Congratulations from this hip duo has certainly not been embraced by all fans or critics alike -- I actually heard an editor of a music pub describe the new concept album as having "nothing to dance to" which I think is just plain laziness. It might not have a huge breakout single or two like the debut Oracular Spectacular but there are plenty of grooves throughout to get the body moving, if so willing of course. The surfer splash of "It's Working" rolls out the attitude full throttle and the second selection "Flash Delirium" expands into the Neo-Psychedelia sound the band has become so famous for yet again.

3. Kandi/One eskimO
One eskimO is a indie band from the UK fronted by Kristian Leontiou who took the trappings of fame with a top ten hit there and created a new band that would venture away from the mainstream. This song fits the bill with its individualistic take what seems at first listen a love song though it's actually about the heartache over love lost.

4. Call Center Girl/Goldspot
Siddhartha Khosla, the singer/songwriter who founded Goldspot, was born in the US to parents from India and he spent a few years there as a young boy. He has a cousin who works at a call center in India, providing a nice backstory about love over the phone line for this sweetly swinging tune from the LA band.

5. Hollywood/Codeine Velvet Club
This new Scottish band presents Jon Lawler of the Fratellis with singer Lou Hickey, a friend of his wife's who also works in burlesque clubs. They share an affinity for 60s duets along with vintage orchestral pop and outfits. A rollicking back up band provides the instrumentation necessary to complete the vision.

6. Swim Until You Can't See Land/Frightened Rabbit
Frightened Rabbit is another band from Scotland, though embracing the indie folk/country label. This is a single off their third album called "Winter of Mixed Drinks" though it was this song title that came to vocalist and guitarist Scott Hutchinson. He thought "Swim Until You Can't See Land" indicated a personal journey rather than a physical one.

7. Percussion Gun/White Rabbits
I actually thought these two 'Rabbits' bands were one in the same -- their musical approach is similar but this American band is based in Brooklyn with the rest of the indie scene though they are originally from the college town of Columbia, Missouri. "Percussion Gun" is a single released last year and from the opening laughter to the drumbeat/percussive keyboards the song sounds like a tightly knit live performance.

8. What's In It For?/Avi Buffalo
I'd say what's with really young bands embracing sounds of bands from decades before yet managing a hip take on it all? Here's a prime example from a Long Beach, California band barely out of high school. Avi is short for Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg, a skateboarder who picked up guitar along the way and started writing songs. Taking lessons from local blues guys is a revealing bit of trivia as old meets new in "What's In It For."

9. Undercover Martyn/Two Door Cinema Club
10. I Can Talk/Two Door Cinema Club
11. Eat That Up, It's Good for You/Two Door Cinema Club
Another very young band, Two Door Cinema Club, has been on my playlists before but these three are off their first full length CD. The title, Tourist History, refers to their hometown of Bangor, Scotland as a tourist destination as well as the band's recent busy traveling agenda. When a drummer dropped out, the band decided they liked the sound of manufactured drum tracks just fine. Each song is a carefully crafted romp with fun shout outs and walls of electronic sound.

12. Plain Material/Memory Tapes
This is a song from on a compilation found on the Urban Outfitters website of bands making a splash at this year's SXSW. It's off the CD Seek Magic by New Jersey based Dayve Hawk who also creates music under the monikers Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes. I just love the way the chorus bursts out of the dry drums and buried vocals to make this song bounce along, a individualist musical vision which caught my attention at first listen.

13. Islands/The XX
14. Crystalised/The XX
This young three piece UK band was basically crowned the darlings of SXSW with their understated, laid-back compositions. During a live session from Austin, a listener sent a tweet to actually ask why the band sounded so sexy (which they did not have to answer, if they knew I'm sure they'd bottle it up for all!) Perhaps it's because the tracks were recorded in a small garage at night, but now the band has songs on TV shows, commercials and is off on tour playing all the big festivals.

15. Drunk Girls/LCD Soundsystem
16. All I Want/LCD Soundsystem
17. You Wanted A Hit/LCD Soundsystem
LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy sings about having to provide a sellable single in the spaced-out track "You Wanted a Hit" but with "Drunk Girls" he easily complies with the request. It's quick, catchy and with sing-a-long lyrics touting the male/female bond of easy virtues. "All I Want" is deeply romantic, echoing Psychedelic Furs or early David Bowie with the swooning guitars which take center stage in front of the sweetly sung vocals.

18. Stay Close/Delorean
This song is off the third studio release by this four piece Spanish alternative dance band. The name of the CD, Subiza, is from the Navarre town in Northern Spain where they record but their love of layering synths for the dance floor is universal. The vocals on "Stay Close" almost sound as if they've invited Animal Collective to their party and I'm happy to join in as well. Get up, get up!
