I did have to insert another song by Christopher Owens, "Nothing More Than Everything To Me." It's a more upbeat tune than "It Comes Back To You," but I do love the video. Owens revisits his youth and the sweet discovery of love. Enjoy it all here or on YouTube.

YouTube Playlist of Late Summer 2014 New Music Playlist Songs
The videos found on YouTube for my Late Summer 2014 New Music Playlist are a mix of the straight forward audio, filmed footage and showing the band playing the song, which is my favorite type. I plugged in live performances from my favorite online music stations and new tunes sources, KCRW (Vacationer's "Paradise") and KEXP (Eels' "Where I'm From"), as it's always a treat to experience live sessions. The Orwells and Interpol videos present the groups in action, while Strand of Oaks is stripped down to just Timothy Showalter and his acoustic guitar. Britt Daniel of Spoon is seen driving along in an eery, apocalyptic world with a twist, Avigdor Zahner-Isenber of Avi Buffalo washes up on a beach only to be forced into office drudgery and Ex Hex chooses to rock along to some wacky food obsessions (deviled eggs!)

Late Summer 2014 New Music Playlist
Here’s another collection of music culled from recent
releases to help keep the summer vibe going. Check out new songs from indie
veterans Spoon, Interpol, The New Pornographers and The Shins along with new
bands such as Jungle and The Orwells. Vacationer, Parquet Courts and Ex Hex
bring the party atmosphere while Christopher Owens, Stand of Oaks and Tweedy
(Jeff Tweedy of Wilco) craft a mellow musical vein.
**EXTRA CREDIT IF YOU CAN NAME EVERY BAND WITH FAMILY
MEMBERS IN THE LINEUP (ANSWER AT THE END OF THIS POST!)
1. “Can’t Do Without You” – Caribou
Canadian composer/producer Dan Snaith is ready with a
sixth studio album since 2005 as Caribou, Our Love. His ready
mix of dance beats, weighty bass lines and electronic wizardry is uncontested
in this lead single and opening track for the album.
2. “Do You” – Spoon
Spoon returns with its eighth studio album, They
Want My Soul, since the indie rock band was formed in Austin in 1993.
The five-piece includes a new member Alex Fischel (keys, guitar) but the
gritty vocals of lead singer Brit Daniels still gives the music its edge, as
witnessed in "Do You."
3. “Gold Silver Diamond” – Generationals
Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer make up the New Orleans-based
indie rock duo Generationals, layering rhythms with stylized pop vocals for a
distinctive sound. "Gold Silver Diamond" is the first single
off the fourth studio album since 2009, Alix.
4. “Paradise Waiting” – Vacationer
Vacationer recently released a sophomore album, Relief, inspired
by playing gigs for fans and being together on the road. The band is a
collaboration of singer Kenny Vasoli, who imbibes every note with sunny warmth,
plus Body Language's Matthew Young and Grand Wheeler.
5. “Sunbathing Animal” – Parquet Courts
The fast-paced punk energy continues with NYC-based band
Parquet Courts, back with a third album called Sunbathing Animal.
This searing rock tune is the title track of the new collection.
6. “From Now On” – Delta Spirit
San Diego's five piece indie rock group Delta Spirit
delivers a true band aesthetic by writing together and recording everything
live for its fourth album, Into the Wide. "From Now
On" is the teaser single for the upcoming album.
7. “Who Needs You” – The Orwells
The Orwells are a young five-piece rock band from the
Chicago suburbs, writing about "anywhere USA" with wild exuberance.
"Who Needs You" is a single off the sophomore album
called Disgraceland.
8. “The Heat” – Jungle
Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland comprise the
London-based duo Jungle, a modern soul musical collective with a self-titled debut album. They expand to a
seven-piece live band to bring the groove of songs like "The Heat" to
the stage.
9. “Hot and Cold” – Ex Hex
Power trio Ex Hex hails from Washington, D.C. This female
group presents the basics, an "unapologetic Rock and Roll," as found
in the single "Hot and Cold" from the upcoming debut album Rips.
10. “Brill Bruisers” – The New Pornographers
"Brill Bruisers" is the title track of
eight-piece Canadian indie rock band The New Pornographer's sixth album since
1999. The signature, full-on vocals of the group create an instant celebration
of the human spirit with soaring melodies and layered harmonies.
11. “So What” – Avi Buffalo
Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg took four years to create his
second album as Avi Buffalo, At Best Cuckold. The dreamy '60s
pop influence saturates the songs again, as evidenced in "So
What."
12. “So Now What” – The Shins
The Shins' feature role in a Zach Braff film (Wish I
Was Here) is reprised in "So Now What," gently reminding
listeners why the Albuquerque band's indie cred remains intact. The song exists
easily on its own merits, and yes, might just change your life.
13. “All the Rage Back Home” – Interpol
"All the Rage Back Home" is the solid opening
track for NYC-based Interpol's fifth studio album since 1997, El
Pintor. Singer Paul Banks takes over bass from the departing member
Carlos Danger, and the group tightly rocks on.
14. “Where I’m From” – Eels
Prolific singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist
Californian Mark Oliver Everett (a.k.a. E) has released his eleventh full
length album for Eels since 1996, The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver
Everett. The introspective song "Where I'm From" draws the listener
in while softly singing private thoughts.
15. “Summer Noon” – Tweedy
Jeff Tweedy of Chicago band Wilco began a solo musical
project with son Spencer on drums adding creative input to form Tweedy. This
song "Summer Moon" finds that familiar world-weary voice over
strumming guitar, from the new ablum called Sukierae.
16. “It Comes Back To You” – Christopher Owens
L.A. based musician Christopher Owens (former frontman of
indie rock band Girls) has released his second solo album, A New
Testament. "It Comes Back To You" highlights Owens' warm
voice and other-worldly artistic vision.
17. “Woke Up To the Light” – Strand of Oaks
Strand of Oaks is the folk rock outfit by Timothy
Showalter based in Philadelphia. The songs for a fourth album, Heal, came
together after a horrific car crash where Showalter was forced to reexamine
everything -- now contained in every note.
18. “Pets” – Deadmau5
Deadmau5 is the stage name of Canadian progressive-house
music producer Joel Thomas Zimmerman, who just released his seventh album since
2005. The airy instrumental "Pets" is one of 25 tracks (minus the
mixes) on this two-disc album, which contains a continuous mix for each
disc.
DID YOU GUESS THREE BANDS?
1. TWEEDY -- FATHER & SON
2. PARQUET COURTS -- BROTHERS
3. THE ORWELLS -- COUSINS & TWIN BROTHERS!!!

Upcoming Releases - Listen to Caribou New Song "Can't Do Without You"
All of a sudden there's a bunch of upcoming releases; I'm counting the days until their drop dates (see list below). One of them is from Dan Snaith, the Canadian mastermind behind the electronica band Caribou (as well as Manitoba and Daphni). His gyrating, funky tune "Odessa" caught my ear with heavy airplay on KCRW back in 2010, and landed a spot in my Late Fall 2010 Playlist plus a Top 20+ Songs of 2010. Based on this one song I was thrilled to catch Snaith live at Moogfest 2010, where he huddled as a quartet behind a drum kit in a corner of the arena stage. (Snaith plays drums, guitar, bass and synths but chooses percussion when performing concerts.) With openers, there's plenty of equipment announcing the next band behind the group and taking up space, but I loved how Snaith felt a need to be even more scrunched together with the rest of the musicians. It also made the performance much more intense, as they fed off of each other's energy while the sound resonated in the cavernous space before a huge crowd.![]() |

The lead single "Can't Do With You" is filled with disjointed samples leading into a fluid groove that finds that "Odessa" bliss once again. It is off the sixth studio album, Our Love, to be released October 7 via Merge Records. Caribou will be appearing during the four-day music festival celebrating the Merge 25th Anniversary on July 26 in Carborro, NC before a full tour this fall, stopping at Webster Hall in NYC November 11. (Merge also recently partnered with Google Play for a label doc and exclusive songs in honor of 25 years.) Check out the song here and other releases -- I've marked my calendar already!

Show & Tell with Avi Buffalo – Live Session on KCRW
An opportunity to watch/listen live to this band proves these wiz kids are for real...Avi Buffalo is a young buzz band making waves from Long Beach, California, which has caught the attention of many as I wrote about them earlier for PopMatters here. They played to critical acclaim at SXSW, opened for Modest Mouse this summer and are now heading out on their own headline tour across North America. They visited the studios of KCRW in Santa Monica September 21st clearly thrilled to be among the bands performing for live sessions there as they quickly admitted to listening and watching to many of the sessions themselves. They started with a laid back version their hit “What’s It In For?” This was the fist song I heard from the group when it was back in heavy rotation on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” early this year. Things ended in a funky jam, which flowed right into the next song with a seasoned approach of a band clearly aware of its abilities. The interview brought out more of the teenage awkwardness under the spotlight. Avi has been playing guitar for seven years and was doodling with it the whole time. He’s the one who writes the music and lyrics before the band jams to “hash things out.” During the session, played by three out of four members of the band, the lyrics stand out a bit more than the layered recording which was certainly nice to experience. They also ran out of time for my favorite song, " Remember Last Time" but it’s here in its entirety for eternity.

Late Spring 2010 New Music Playlist
I wasn't sure whether to call this Late Spring or Early Summer Playlist with all the summery sounds and laid-back vibes within the songs that made the cut. But with new releases by the bands in the last post about free album previews (The National, New Pornographers and Minus the Bear) the next list is filling up quickly in time for summer listening. Link here to listen, enjoy!
1. It's Working/MGMT
2. Flash Delirium/MGMT
The second release Congratulations from this hip duo has certainly not been embraced by all fans or critics alike -- I actually heard an editor of a music pub describe the new concept album as having "nothing to dance to" which I think is just plain laziness. It might not have a huge breakout single or two like the debut Oracular Spectacular but there are plenty of grooves throughout to get the body moving, if so willing of course. The surfer splash of "It's Working" rolls out the attitude full throttle and the second selection "Flash Delirium" expands into the Neo-Psychedelia sound the band has become so famous for yet again.
3. Kandi/One eskimO
One eskimO is a indie band from the UK fronted by Kristian Leontiou who took the trappings of fame with a top ten hit there and created a new band that would venture away from the mainstream. This song fits the bill with its individualistic take what seems at first listen a love song though it's actually about the heartache over love lost.
4. Call Center Girl/Goldspot
Siddhartha Khosla, the singer/songwriter who founded Goldspot, was born in the US to parents from India and he spent a few years there as a young boy. He has a cousin who works at a call center in India, providing a nice backstory about love over the phone line for this sweetly swinging tune from the LA band.
5. Hollywood/Codeine Velvet Club
This new Scottish band presents Jon Lawler of the Fratellis with singer Lou Hickey, a friend of his wife's who also works in burlesque clubs. They share an affinity for 60s duets along with vintage orchestral pop and outfits. A rollicking back up band provides the instrumentation necessary to complete the vision.
6. Swim Until You Can't See Land/Frightened Rabbit
Frightened Rabbit is another band from Scotland, though embracing the indie folk/country label. This is a single off their third album called "Winter of Mixed Drinks" though it was this song title that came to vocalist and guitarist Scott Hutchinson. He thought "Swim Until You Can't See Land" indicated a personal journey rather than a physical one.
7. Percussion Gun/White Rabbits
I actually thought these two 'Rabbits' bands were one in the same -- their musical approach is similar but this American band is based in Brooklyn with the rest of the indie scene though they are originally from the college town of Columbia, Missouri. "Percussion Gun" is a single released last year and from the opening laughter to the drumbeat/percussive keyboards the song sounds like a tightly knit live performance.
8. What's In It For?/Avi Buffalo
I'd say what's with really young bands embracing sounds of bands from decades before yet managing a hip take on it all? Here's a prime example from a Long Beach, California band barely out of high school. Avi is short for Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg, a skateboarder who picked up guitar along the way and started writing songs. Taking lessons from local blues guys is a revealing bit of trivia as old meets new in "What's In It For."
9. Undercover Martyn/Two Door Cinema Club
10. I Can Talk/Two Door Cinema Club
11. Eat That Up, It's Good for You/Two Door Cinema Club
Another very young band, Two Door Cinema Club, has been on my playlists before but these three are off their first full length CD. The title, Tourist History, refers to their hometown of Bangor, Scotland as a tourist destination as well as the band's recent busy traveling agenda. When a drummer dropped out, the band decided they liked the sound of manufactured drum tracks just fine. Each song is a carefully crafted romp with fun shout outs and walls of electronic sound.
12. Plain Material/Memory Tapes
This is a song from on a compilation found on the Urban Outfitters website of bands making a splash at this year's SXSW. It's off the CD Seek Magic by New Jersey based Dayve Hawk who also creates music under the monikers Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes. I just love the way the chorus bursts out of the dry drums and buried vocals to make this song bounce along, a individualist musical vision which caught my attention at first listen.
13. Islands/The XX
14. Crystalised/The XX
This young three piece UK band was basically crowned the darlings of SXSW with their understated, laid-back compositions. During a live session from Austin, a listener sent a tweet to actually ask why the band sounded so sexy (which they did not have to answer, if they knew I'm sure they'd bottle it up for all!) Perhaps it's because the tracks were recorded in a small garage at night, but now the band has songs on TV shows, commercials and is off on tour playing all the big festivals.
15. Drunk Girls/LCD Soundsystem
16. All I Want/LCD Soundsystem
17. You Wanted A Hit/LCD Soundsystem
LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy sings about having to provide a sellable single in the spaced-out track "You Wanted a Hit" but with "Drunk Girls" he easily complies with the request. It's quick, catchy and with sing-a-long lyrics touting the male/female bond of easy virtues. "All I Want" is deeply romantic, echoing Psychedelic Furs or early David Bowie with the swooning guitars which take center stage in front of the sweetly sung vocals.
18. Stay Close/Delorean
This song is off the third studio release by this four piece Spanish alternative dance band. The name of the CD, Subiza, is from the Navarre town in Northern Spain where they record but their love of layering synths for the dance floor is universal. The vocals on "Stay Close" almost sound as if they've invited Animal Collective to their party and I'm happy to join in as well. Get up, get up!
